Mule deer get their name from their distinct mule like ears that move independently and constantly. In fact, these unique ears can reach lengths of 10 inches. Other than it’s ears, the mule deer appears much stockier than the whitetail deer and typically weighs in at about 150 to 300 pounds. Its coat has a grayish brown color in the winter and a reddish brown color in the summer and usually has white undersides and a black tipped tail. Because of this, the mule deer is also referred to as a blacktail deer by some.
The mule deer’s antlers grow in a 'Y' formation from the head and are used to gain dominance status. An adult buck has 4 points on each antler although they don't use their antlers for protection from predators, but to establish dominance over other bucks. They rely largely upon the sense of smell in detecting danger and often overlook stationary items.
Mule deer hunts can prove to be very exciting and provide a large trophy for the hunter as well as excellent table fare. Mule deer hunt dates are from September 1st through October 31st.
